Backflow Technician Trainee (Certified Preferred)

POSITION:                   Backflow Technician

 

DEPARTMENT:          Distribution & Conveyance

 

Purpose of Classification: 

The purpose of this classification is to test and repair and backflow prevention devices to ensure the safety of the water supply. 

Essential Functions:  

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. 

Repairs and tests water backflow preventers in the shop and in the field; disassembles devices; cleans serviceable parts; and tests assembled devices for proper operation. 

Replaces backflow preventers in the field and tests the operation of the device with portable testing equipment. 

Maintains inventory of repair materials. 

May be required to test water meters and MXU units in the field at meter sites. 

Maintains records of work completed: and may assist in maintaining hazard assessments of businesses and location records for tested and replaced devices. 

Performs Backflow Surveys for Commercial Accounts and new residential accounts.   

Installs new water meters and backflow devices. 

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures. 

Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. 

Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and maintains backflow test kit, impact gun, ventilation fan and other tools and equipment. 

Communicates with supervisor, other CCWA employees, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. 

Additional Functions: 

This position may require on call assignments. 

Performs other related duties as required. 

Minimum Qualifications Backflow Technician Trainee:

High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by general knowledge in meter and backflow repair; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. This is considered a Safety Sensitive position.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain the following additional certifications or licensures within 12 months of hire:  Backflow Prevention.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all CCWA or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Minimum Qualifications Backflow Technician: 

High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of experience in meter and backflow repair; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. This is considered a Safety Sensitive position. 

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain the following additional certifications or licensures:  Backflow Prevention.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. 

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring. 

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives. 

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria. 

ADA Compliance:  

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (25-50 pounds). 

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. 

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, or animal/human bites.

PAYGRADE:               Backflow Trainee: 14H (starts at $19.81/hour)  Backflow Technician: 15H (starts at $21.61/hour)
